Water Safety Scotland – Advice Regarding Flooding

Flooding is a regular occurrence in Scotland and can happen at any time of the year. Areas at higher risk are normally in closer proximity to rivers, the coast, or prone to surface water build-up.

In Scotland, anyone can use the Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s postcode flood map checker, to assess their level of risk and this message aims to raise awareness of the potential dangers of flooding and how to stay as safe as possible during times of flooding both inland and at the coast.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Scottish Flood Forum and Ready Scotland all have important advice on staying informed, preparing for flooding and how to respond in a flooding emergency.

 Key messages:

• Flooding can happen at any time of the year in Scotland so it’s best to be prepared

• Don’t watch flooding unfold at the coast or inland – get yourself to an area of safety

• Avoid walking or driving through flood water – six inches of fast-flowing water can knock over an adult and two feet of water can move a car.
