Crime prevention officers are raising awareness of an increase in diesel theft, with fuel being syphoned from vehicles, tractors, plant and other agricultural machinery across rural communities.
With current high fuel prices, diesel is a valuable target for thieves. Vehicles and machinery left unattended, particularly overnight or in remote locations, can be vulnerable.
How you can help protect your fuel
Install anti-syphon devices: Fit suitable anti-syphon devices to fuel tanks to make it more difficult for thieves to access and remove fuel.
Consider bonded fuel tanks: Where appropriate, use bonded tanks to provide additional protection against fuel theft.
Install CCTV: Visible CCTV can act as a deterrent and help identify suspicious activity.
Install tank level monitors and alarms for early detection if there is a drop in fuel levels.
Keep fuel tanks visible: Where possible, position fuel tanks and machinery close to your home, workshop or other occupied buildings where they can be monitored.
Secure vehicles and machinery: Park in locked buildings or secure compounds whenever possible, particularly overnight.
Consider the wider security of the area machines are parked unattended, who has access? How easy are they to access? Have you layered security measures to make accessing the fuel more difficult?
Report suspicious activity: Be vigilant and report suspicious vehicles or individuals around farms, fuel tanks and agricultural machinery.

Look for appropriate security products and measures recognised by Secured by Design and Sold Secure that meet Police preferred specification.
