In March and April 2026, at least 50,000 litres of fuel were stolen in 44 incidents across the UK. In comparison to March and April 2025, there was only 20 incidents and around 14,525 litres stolen. This is an increase of incidents by 120% and an increase in the amount of litres stolen fuel by 340%.
This is being driven by the high price of fuel being driving by the conflict in the Middle East, which led to a large increase in fuel prices at the start of March 2026. This saw diesel increase by 34%. Currently at £1.86p a litre. This increase in price has led to fuel theft being a national problem.
As of March 2026 it has been reported that thefts of fuel made up 40% of thefts from Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs)
The current methods used include quad bikes with trailers carrying jerry cans which arrive and escape off -road. Vans with internal containers are also used with the van concealing the contents.
